A Guide to Easy Carpet Installation

Carpet installation may seem difficult but with patience and simple instructions the project can go smoothly. Aside from carpet and padding, you will need a carpet knife, hammer, duct tape and tacking strips. Do your research in advance by purchasing a carpet installation video or book. Many stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s offer free classes that can be very instructive and the sales personnel at these stores are excellent sources should you get stuck and need some advice.

The first thing to do is to measure the length and width of the room and write it down. Check your retailer for carpet remnants before purchasing newly cut carpet. Sometimes there will be a piece large enough if you are only planning to do a single room and this can save you quite a bit of money. Keep in mind that having four extra inches on all sides of the carpet is a good idea. Also, Berber carpet is easier to install because it requires less stretching.

Begin your project by hammering in the tacking strips around the perimeter minus any doorways so that the tacks are pointing up to catch the carpet backing. Then padding should be laid down within the tacking strip border, not on top of the strips. Make sure that you purchased enough padding to cover the entire area or there will be uneven spots. Use duct tape to tape together any split padding sections and secure it to the floor. At that point you are ready to lay down your carpet.

The best way to get accurate cuts is to unroll the carpet in the area it is being laid down and cut off any major excess. Then you can start on one wall trimming edges and tucking them tightly to the wall and keeping it snug around the tacking strips. Gently hammer those edges into the strips before pulling the carpet tight to the opposite wall to trim and tuck. Then all you have left is to trim and tuck the sides.

You can also rent a stretching tool or use a baseball bat or pipe to push all of the air bubbles out for a tighter fitting carpet. You may be surprised to discover that carpet installation actually takes more patience than skill.
